[Denmark] Phd Posistion in Veterinary Epidemiology and Virology at Technical University of Denmark
A 3 year PhD position in veterinary epidemiology and virology is available at the National Veterinary Institute (DTU).
The successful candidate will be placed at the National Veterinary Institute, Copenhagen, to work in the Section for Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Sector Consultancy, and will work for about 1 year at the Division of Virology, Lindholm Island between Moen and Zealand (near Kalvehave). The project is conducted in collaboration with the Danish Cattle Federation.
Job description The overall aim of the PhD project is to optimize the surveillance of serious infections in cattle taking the structural development of the Danish cattle industry into account, leading to fewer but larger herds. This is to be done by 1) making effective use of existing data on health and production parameters on the animal and herd level to allow a risk based surveillance approach and 2) by increasing the sensitivity of the surveillance system by validating and improving the diagnostic procedures for screening of pooled bulk milk samples and 3) optimizing the performance of the surveillance program to ensure that it is focused on high risk animals/herds, can be used for early warning and is cost/effective. Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) is used in the project as an example. BVD has been eradicated in the Danish cattle population during the last 15 years. The present surveillance system is based on bulk-milk-analysis which was validated using considerably smaller herds with a higher percentage of antibody positive lactating cows. The present situation where only a few cows may have antibodies need new considerations of how to collect samples and how to analyse them to have a cost effective and sensitive system.
[UK] 25 PhD Studentships at Bournemouth University
25 PhD Studentships at Bournemouth University, UK
BU is justifiably proud of its reputation for excellence in research. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results, BU was the fourth most improved university in the UK for the quality of its research and achieving a high global research profile.
The RAE ranking means that BU is now in the top ten for research amongst the 60 new universities (UK institutions which have become universities since 1992).
There are over 100 PhD researchers carrying out their subject-based research under the supervision of some of the leading researchers in their fields at BU. Many of our research centres have an international reputation for their outputs, and they also focus on research with potential for commercial exploitation.
[Australia] PhD Research Scholarship in Asia-Pacific Studies at University of Wollongong
PhD Research Scholarship in Asia-Pacific Studies at University of Wollongong
Two scholarships are available for PhD research to commence in Semester 1, 2010. The scholarships are associated with Professor Vera Mackie`s ARC Future Fellowship Project on Human Rights in the Asia-Pacific Region. Applicants should have a first-class honours degree with a specialisation in Asia-Pacific studies. Language skills from the region to be studied would be an advantage. Possible topics include a study of human rights in a specific country in the region, or a thematic study such as sexuality and human rights or indigeneity and human rights.

[The Netherlands] PhD Position in Climate Research and Seismology at Global Climate of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute
PhD Position in Climate Research and Seismology at Global Climate of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute
Within the sector of Climate research and Seismology, department Global Climate of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) we offer a PhD position.
General information KNMI (www.knmi.nl) is the national institute for weather and climate change in the Netherlands. The Climate Research department focuses on understanding and predicting climate change. The section global climate in particular addresses the fundamental processes related to climate change and modeling of these processes. Understanding nonlinear climate change and decadal climate variations and developing scenarios for such variations are key issues in this department.
Job information The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO)-program Feedbacks in the Climate System has funded the project `How the Meridional Overturning Circulation interacts with climate: cause and effect of variations in the sinking of deep water.` The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC; sometimes identified with the Warm Gulf Stream), transports large amounts of heat from the subtropics to more northerly regions. Multi-annual fluctuations in the MOC have a significant influence on European climate. Because the ocean is a relatively `slow` system, with a memory of many years to centuries, climate prediction is possible once the initial state of the MOC is known. A further demand, however, is that climate models correctly simulate the evolution of the MOC and the interaction between MOC and climate. Because the MOC is badly constrained by observations, the evolution of the MOC in climate models is hardly validated. We suggest a new strategy to validate the MOC/climate interaction and to assess model biases. Recently, a theory on the mechanism of the sinking of deep water, that is, the downwelling branch of the MOC was developed. With the aid of scaling laws and budget analysis one can assess whether models give an accurate description of the downwelling branch of the MOC.
